The top-of-the-line Marriott rewards credit card, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant ™ American Express® Card, is switching up one of its standout benefits, but the new perk it’s swapping in could actually be more valuable if you don’t have any upcoming travel plans.

This premium card, with a $ 450 annual fee, offers up to $ 300 in statement credits each cardmember year on purchases made with the card at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels. Starting September 22, 2022, however, this benefit will be replaced with a new monthly statement credit that applies specifically to restaurant purchases. Cardholders can earn up to $ 25 back each month on restaurant purchases worldwide that are made with their Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant ™ American Express® Card.

We’re focused here on the rewards and perks that come with each card. These cards won’t be worth it if you’re paying interest or late fees. When using a credit card, it’s important to pay your balance in full each month , make payments on time, and only spend what you can afford to pay.

The card’s $ 300 annual statement credit for Marriott purchases has been a big selling point, as it effectively drops the annual fee to $ 150 from $ 450 if you maximize it by spending at least $ 300 on qualifying Marriott Bonvoy purchases each year.

The new monthly dining credit has the potential to get you the same amount of value — $ 25 back each month adds up to $ 300 in a year — but it may require a bit more planning to take full advantage, especially if you have other cards that offer bonus rewards on dining and restaurants. To get up to $ 25 back in statement credits each month, you’ll need to pay for your restaurant bills with the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant ™ American Express® Card, so you’ll want to have it handy even if you usually don’t carry your hotel credit card in your wallet every day.

Other reasons to consider the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Amex

If you don’t have the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant ™ American Express® Card but you frequently stay at Marriott Bonvoy hotels, it could be worth considering thanks to several hotel-related benefits and a general welcome bonus of 75,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points after using your new card to make $ 3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening.

Depending on how you like to use your Marriott points, that welcome bonus can score you several nights at a lower-tier hotel or a night or two at high-end chains like St. Regis and Autograph Collection.

Beyond the welcome bonus, cardholders can earn points on all their purchases with the card. Here’s how that earning breaks down:

  • Earn 6x Marriott points on eligible hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program
  • Earn 3x points at US restaurants and on flights purchased directly from the airline
  • Earn 2x on all other purchases

The card also offers some useful perks for frequent Marriott guests, including a free night award that you can use at Bonvoy hotels that charge up to 50,000 points per night and complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Gold elite status, which gets you 25% more points on paid Marriott stays and late checkout, when it’s available. If you’re aiming for an even higher level of elite status, you’ll appreciate that the card also offers 15 elite night credits toward the next level of Marriott Bonvoy status each calendar year. Read our Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Amex card review for an in-depth look at all the card’s features, including its various travel protections like trip cancellation insurance.

When the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant ™ American Express® Card phases out its annual $ 300 statement credit and replaces it with up to $ 25 in monthly credits for restaurant spending worldwide on September 22, it probably won’t hugely change the card’s appeal. It’s best suited for Frequent rather than occasional Marriott Bonvoy guests either way, but the upcoming monthly dining credits do have the potential to be more useful for those whose travel plans are still on hold. Just remember to use the card to make your restaurant purchases, or you won’ t get up to $ 25 back each month!
